Why Lao Jia Yi Lu is so hard to learn
Lao Jia Yi Lu is the foundation of Chen family taijiquan. It is also long, intricate and full of detail that is easy to miss.
If you have ever learned it in a class, you know the pattern. You leave with three new movements that felt clear at the time. By the next morning, you can't remember where the weight goes, which way the waist turns, or what the back hand was doing.
So you look online. You find fragments: one angle, one teacher, often a different version from the last video you watched.
You end up practising something that is almost right, and “almost right” becomes a habit that takes years to undo.
Nothing hidden. Nothing skipped. Nothing forgotten.
This course was filmed so that you never have to guess. Two cameras capture four angles each, giving you eight views of every single movement. Whichever way you are facing in the form, you can see exactly what the body is doing.
- Eight angles of every movement. Front, back, sides and diagonals, so no hand, foot or turn is ever out of view.
- Every turn and weight transfer outlined. Not just where you end up, but how you get there.
- 52 lessons, one step at a time. The 74 movements are broken into manageable pieces you can practise until they are yours.
- Yours for life. Forget a detail next week, next year or ten years from now? Watch it again.
If your form looks like this, you have everything you need to keep deepening your taiji for the rest of your life.
2024 and 2026. Still being corrected.
I'm not a master. I'm a student who was lucky enough to find one.
IÂ met Master Chen Yingjun in 2013. From the very first lesson, I knew I was in the presence of a true master.
That first class brought a hard revelation: I had been training the wrong form. For years I had been practising Xin Jia, the “New Frame.” As Master Chen explained, its depth only really opens up once Lao Jia Yi Lu is deeply understood. I had no idea. I had been on the wrong path for years.
That day, I committed to Lao Jia Yi Lu completely. I wanted to know it inside out.
Since that first lesson, I’ve spent more than 500 hours training directly under Master Chen: watching the form performed at the highest level, up close, and asking every question I could think of to understand it more deeply. Every turn. Every transfer of weight.
More than a decade of practising one form, and I am still discovering new depth and nuance. It is a work of art.
A form passed down through the Chen family
Lao Jia Yi Lu, the “Old Frame, First Routine,” has been handed down within the Chen family of Chenjiagou village for generations. In the words of Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang, everything in Chen taijiquan begins with it.
Master Chen Yingjun is a direct descendant of that family: son of Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang, one of the “Four Tigers” who brought Chen taijiquan to the world, and great-grandson of the legendary Chen Fake. His father holds the highest rank in Chinese martial arts.
The form you will learn here is the form as he teaches it, not a simplified, competition or modernised version.

FAQ
Do I need any previous taiji experience?
No. The foundation lessons prepare you before the form begins. If you already practise, the eight angles will help you refine details you may have missed.
How much space do I need?
[Your answer, e.g. a space of roughly 3 Ă— 3 metres is enough; you can adapt the stepping to a smaller room.]
How long will it take to learn the whole form?
[Your answer, e.g. practising most days, many students learn the full sequence in 6–12 months. Refining it takes a lifetime.]
Can I really learn taiji online?
Online learning can't replace a teacher's hands, but it solves the biggest problem: remembering what you were taught. You can rewatch every movement from eight angles, as often as you need, and your two coaching sessions give you personal feedback.
Is this the same form Master Chen Yingjun teaches?
Yes. It is Lao Jia Yi Lu as I have learned it from him over 500+ hours since 2013, with corrections continuing to this day.
How long do I have access?
For life, including any future updates to the course.
How do the coaching sessions work?
[Your answer, e.g. book through a link inside the course; sessions are on Zoom; use them any time within 12 months.]
What if it's not for me?
You have 14 days to request a full refund.
The road is long. Start it on the right foot.
Mastery takes a lifetime. But every step of that lifetime is built on the form you learn now.
Learn it accurately, from every angle, and keep it for life.
