The Routine That Changed My Life

In 2009, a couple of years after I started learning Taiji, I became obsessed with it. I saved for a year, quit my job and moved to Thailand. The plan was three months of intensive training, twice a day, every day, then on to China to train with other masters. I was sure that kind of immersion would send me light years ahead.

Instead, I was humbled. I realised I’d barely scratched the surface of the art. I’d also found a wonderful teacher, the late Thomas Ogram, who taught me the body opening routine at the heart of this course. I felt amazing, and I knew going to China would be a waste of time when I still had so much to learn right where I was. So I stayed the full six months.

It changed everything. As my body relaxed and opened, I felt the chi awaken in a way I didn’t know was possible. Within a few months, the anxiety I’d lived with for years faded, and it never came back.

I used to see the world in opposites: right and wrong, good and bad, love and hate. Almost every exercise in this routine is done in both directions, and over time it brought a deep balance to my body. Not the balance of walking a tightrope, but an inner balance. I can’t fully explain it, but balance in my body brought balance to my mind and emotions, and I began to see the value in all of life.

The most remarkable change was a deeper sense of self. I could feel any part of my body just by placing my mind there, and I could tangibly feel the aliveness and vitality inside me. It was beautiful.

I was lucky enough to have six months away from work to go deep. You don’t need that. I’ve broken the routine into short lessons so you can learn it at home, a few minutes at a time, and discover what it opens up for you.

This is my personal experience. Everyone’s practice is different and results aren’t guaranteed. This course isn’t a substitute for medical or mental health care.
